2012 Chevrolet Sonic at Leman Chevy City

2012 Chevrolet Sonic at Leman's Chevy City

While we can't exactly label the arrival of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic as something along the lines of "Extreme Makeover: Car Edition," the fact that this is the car replacing the now-defunct Chevy Aveo still has to be considered pretty surprising.  While both were designed to serve as Chevy's subcompact offering, the Sonic rebranding offers a whole new set of traits that the Aveo simply never had.

The consensus, then, is that the new Sonic is a wholly more desirable vehicle than its predecessor.  It's not that there was anything wrong with the Aveo; it's just that the Sonic is that much better, and we at Sam Leman Chevrolet are absolutely ecstatic to have the ability to offer it to our customers.

The Sonic breaks down into two body types: a sedan and a four-door hatchback.  Both run on a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine capable of a class-leading 138-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque, however there is a turbocharged option that adds an extra 23 lb-ft of torque.

People don't necessarily buy subcompacts for their power, though.  The expectation is for a car this small to have exceptional gas mileage, and the Sonic doesn't disappoint.  At 40 mpg, potential customers are going to end up with more than respectable gas mileage, and while that's not tops among the segment, it certainly is competitive.

On top of all those positive traits, what really allows the Sonic to stand out is its deceivingly roomy and comfortable interior, about which many critics have commented quite positively.

There are three trims: the LS, LT, and LTZ?which offer increasing amounts of luxury and performance.  Anyone a customer picks, however, will be more than worth the investment.

This is an extremely safe little vehicle, as well.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it the prestigious "Top Safety Pick," awarding the Sonic top scores in frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength crash tests.  Also of note is the NHSTA's 5-star overall designation for the vehicle, making it one of ten GM vehicles to have been given top safety honors.

What makes the Sonic so safe?  It's a combination of things, including ten airbags, stability control, rollover sensors, and antilock brakes.  In a subcompact, it's so important to make safety a priority, and that's exactly what Chevrolet has done with this new model.

For too long, foreign automakers have owned the subcompact market, but many critics agree that the 2012 Chevy Sonic is a game-changer in that arena.  This is a good-looking, safe, efficient, and powerful little car that plans on giving the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla a serious run for their money.

It's certainly not the Chevy Aveo, but we think that's a good thing.   We really believe our customers are going to fall in love with the new Sonic.  We certainly have.
